Inspired by the Conover’s “A SnowWalker’s Companion, this toboggan is modelled after the early toboggans of Native Americans, trappers, and traders of the north.
It has a no-maintenance HDPE bottom for ease of pulling and durability. Crosspieces are made of Michigan White Ash with a liberal coat of exterior oil. Running line and tumpline are made of black 4mm kernmantle (nylon core with a durable sheath). Toboggan plastic contains black pigment that resists UV better and melts frost off the bottom in the morning sun. All toboggan lengths are made from a solid sheet of HDPE.
The SnowWalker Petite is a new design that was inspired for use for my kids when we do our annual BWCA Lake Trout trip in February. Instead of the three of them sharing a toboggan I decided to provide each their own. Having one's own toboggan provides a new level of ownership to the responsibilities of travel and taking care of one's own gear and that of the group. I shortened up this toboggan to a 5' useable length. The hood on the Petite forms a partial curve to ride up and over snow, etc. Check out the images to the right to catch a glimpse of this new addition to the SnowWalker line.
Tump strap is a 2" wide x 48" long cotton band attached to toboggan with two 9' lengths of cord. Tump line places you about 9 feet in front of the toboggan. Each crosspiece is fastened using five stainless steel screws.Toboggan comes complete with BRS Lashing System.
A loop at the tail allows for controlled descents or skijoring control when under dog power. This toboggan can be gracefully bent or rolled up to fit into any vehicle or the plane that will land you on Beaverhouse Lake for your winter walk back to Ely!

NOTE: This toboggan design is going to be revamped for 2013. The primary change will be in the hood design. The tight second curl will be removed and 6" will be added to the useable length to create a full 9' and 11' toboggan. I will still use copper nails riveting cross pieces in place. These changes will reduce the cost a bit on this toboggan but increase the useful length. Stay tuned!
The Traditional SnowWalker is about as traditional as you can get in HDPE!
Hood design is reflective of early toboggan designs with a large radius followed by a tight curl at the top. Crosspieces are made of the north wood’s Black Ash with a liberal coat of exterior oil. Fasteners are copper nails run through crosspiece and riveted with a copper burr. Toboggans come in black HDPE unless white is specified. 10.5' toboggan has one riveted seem 2' from the tail to get desired length.
Like the SnowWalker, it has a no-maintenance HDPE bottom for ease of pulling and durability. Running line and tumpline are made of black 4mm kernmantle (nylon core with a durable sheath). Tumpline is a 2" wide cotton band and places you about 9 feet in front of the toboggan. Toboggan comes complete with BRS Lashing System.
